A surd is an irrational number that is not transcendental; i.e., it is an irrational root of some algebraic equation with rational coefficients.
The term is from Latin for “deaf” or “hard of hearing.”
Musical instrument that are tuned resonate at frequencies that correspond to rational numbers, while drums, for example, resonate at transcendental frequencies.
“Surd” frequencies do not resonate or make music.
